‘강령사바’는 과거 강령술로 단짝 친구를 혼수상태에 빠뜨린 초등학생 세연의 이야기에서 시작한다. 전학 간 학교에서 새로운 친구들을 만난 세연은 폐수련원을 찾았다가 다시 금기의 강령술을 시도하게 되고, 이후 현실과 환각의 경계가 무너지기 시작한다. 아이들의 호기심으로 시작된 의식은 연이은 희생으로 이어진다. 학교와 폐수련원이라는 익숙한 공간은 폐쇄적인 공포의 무대로 변하고, 무엇이 현실이고 악귀가 만들어낸 환영인지 알 수 없는 상황이 펼쳐진다. 특히 폐수련원은 악귀와 맞서야 하는 장소인 동시에 세연이 과거의 죄책감과 다시 마주하는 공간으로 그려진다. 푸른 조명과 짙은 그림자, 좁은 실내와 풀숲 등을 활용해 제한된 시야 속에서 악귀의 정체와 사건의 실체를 쫓게 한다. ‘강령사바’는 초자연적인 공포뿐 아니라 살아남은 세연의 죄책감과 고립에도 초점을 맞춘다. 자신이 겪은 일을 아무도 믿어주지 않자 세연은 결국 다른 사람과 관계를 맺지 않는 삶을 택한다. 금기를 어긴 대가와 친구들의 희생, 진실을 증명할 수 없는 무력감을 한 인물의 서사에 담아내면서 강령술을 소재로 한 오컬트 공포에 생존자의 심리적 후유증을 더했다.
